Food waste is everywhere right now, it’s all over the news and social media, and honestly it makes sense why. So much perfectly good food ends up being thrown away every single day. Not only is that a waste of money, but it is also a waste of all the time, energy, and resources that went into producing it in the first place.
A lot of the conversation has been around supermarkets, and rightly so. Because of things like strict appearance standards and overstocking, huge amounts of fresh food never even get the chance to be eaten. It is a big issue, and while things are slowly improving, there is still a long way to go.
At Scottish Venison Company, we see things a bit differently. For us, it all comes down to respect. Respect for the animal, the environment, and the food on your plate. Venison naturally fits into a more low waste way of eating, but it is also about how it is handled. Every part of the animal has a purpose, whether it is a premium cut or something better suited for slow cooking. Nothing should be wasted when it can be used properly.
One of the things we are really excited about is our upcoming butchery classes. These will be hands on sessions where people can learn how to skin and butcher venison themselves. The aim is simple, to help people understand where their food comes from and how to make the most of it. When you are involved in the process, you naturally waste less because you value it more. Even better, everything prepared during the class will be taken home, so nothing goes to waste.
Cutting down food waste does not have to be complicated. It can be as simple as planning your meals a bit better, using up leftovers, or choosing to buy from businesses that actually care about what they are doing. At The Scottish Venison Company, that is something we take seriously. We are all about keeping things natural, using traditional skills, and making sure food is valued the way it should be.
Because at the end of the day, when you waste less, you appreciate it more.
